Garment and textile factories believe that the need for all workers to be vaccinated as a condition of employment is an absolute necessity.

The Textile Clothing and Footwear Council said the need to vaccinate fulfilled legal obligations of duty of care.

Council president Mike Towler said workers who opted against the COVID-19 vaccination, were advised to stay home for the safety of their fellow workers.

He said members believed unvaccinated workers should stay at home until it was safe for them to return to work.

The council has taken a very firm stance backing members who decided to exclude staff from their workplaces because of an unwillingness to have the COVID-19 vaccine.

“The nature of our industry and the manufacturing processes involved do not allow for our workers to work from home,” Mr Towler said.

“Members who are currently operating with permits issued by the Ministry of Commerce, Trade, Tourism and Transport (MCTTT) are doing so under COVIDSAFE plans that are both very costly, and somewhat unproductive.”

While it was an individual’s right to choose not to be vaccinated, it was equally the employers decision to decide if unvaccinated staff could safely attend their workplace, Mr Towler said.

“Many of our members have decided that it is not safe for unvaccinated staff to attend their workplace.”

“They have given those staff who have decided not to be vaccinated the necessary time, support and factual information to make their individual decisions.”

The council said it had no choice under the circumstances, but to maintain a difficult stance on the position of vaccination forits workers.
