Fiji Airways Fijian 7s head coach, Gareth Baber has singled out three players after they won the Oceania 7s on Sunday in Townsville.

They are former Ratu Kadavulevu School students Sireli Maqala, Jiuta Wainiqolo and Taveuni winger Iosefo Masi.

“There have been some notable performances and probably the biggest ones are Maqala, Masi along with Jiuta Wainiqolo. The three of them have really put their hands up for selection,” Baber said.

“They are diligent about the way they do their work and showing that on the field.

“It’s no secret the harder you work the better it shows on the field.

“But I’m pleased with the squad across the board. The players worked hard and for each other.

“At times it would get a little more

individual but that’s not anybody’s fault, the players understand exactly where that comes from.

“I think we are in a good spot. We played some good stuff but there is always stuff to work on.”

Baber indicated that there is always more to improve on.

“We scored good tries which is what we are always after but we will continue working on our shape and quality in defence,” he said.

“We’ve not been in an international competition for 15 months but I’m pleased with the level we are at.

“I’m pleased with the intensity we bring to the games.

“We still got a bit little more work to do physically. But overall, there is satisfaction that we are on the right path to the Olympics.

Injury updates

“Kalione Nasoko injured his shoulder (dislocation) but he is okay. Asaeli Tuivuaka had a concussion and we are monitoring him.”

He will name 12 players for the Tokyo Olympics next month later this week.
