Methodist Church of Fiji and Rotuma president Reverend Ili Vunisuwai has urged members to guard themselves from anti-vaxxers.

Reverend Vunisuwai said this as the church completed its nationwide two-month chain prayer on Wednesday.

“While we continue to experience this pandemic, we need to look up to God through prayer and give our supplications to keep us safe,” Reverend Vunisuwai said.

As the death toll rises, he said the church remains firm in that it will carry out its role towards the general welfare of the people.

He said he was aware that some of the church members had questioned the church executive members’ role in the vaccination drive.

“I responded saying that we are human beings consisting of spirit, soul, and body. They are inseparable,” he said.

“Hence, my role is to help people live a spiritual and healthy life.

“Hundreds of people have lost their jobs and as a result, the families are suffering.

“Similarly, our children are facing a lot of challenges at home.

“Our way forward is a vaccine approved by the Ministry of Health and World Health Organisation.”

All 59 divisions of the church joined in the chain prayer that was scheduled from 5pm-6pm daily. The final session on Wednesday culminated with the hymn My Soul Gives Glory to the My God.

Church general secretary Reverend Iliesa Naivalu said: “It was an emotional sight to see believers kneeling down with their children crying to God to save us from this virus.”

“There have been words of appreciation coming from all divisions and those abroad and those in the Middle East.

“They have expressed different kinds of feeling like the illuminating spirit of the Holy Spirit.”

“More than 200,000 members joined in from around the world and we stood in one accord to lift Fiji up to Jesus.”
