Editorial: Verbal Abuse Towards Those Who Encourage The Jab Is Not The Christian Way

Fiji reached a new low earlier this week when men of the cloth, who took to social media to encourage church members to get vaccinated, were verbally abused.

The abusers were random people, including those who were from the same church.

The spiritual leaders were sworn at and reminded in the comment section of the live videos that as individuals, they had the right to choose.

Of course, they do. But would these same people do the same face to face? Maybe not.

This, along with the verbal abuse thrown at our Christian leaders, is perhaps a reflection of Fiji’s spiritual state.

A state where one’s values and integrity are questioned regardless of standing; where disobedience is rampant among those who continue to breach curfew and fail to adhere to COVID-safe protocols.

It is a sad state of affairs.

Among some Christian circles, more time is spent arguing about why fellow brethren should not get the jab.

The stories that are emerging of the distortion of one’s biological makeup after taking the vaccine is just one of many absurd tales being shared even during men’s fellowship online meetings.

It is mind-boggling that those, considered level-headed, believe this kind of stuff.

The challenge remains.

If Christians were true to their calling as frontline warriors, collectively they would be the first to stand in line, roll up their sleeves and take the jab.

They would support their church leaders and encourage vaccination.

Some have even put up their hands to volunteer.

The month-long prayer programme conducted collectively by several churches is commendable.

It is much needed.

Our frontliners are tired.

Beyond the welcoming smile we see behind the face shields and masks is a yearning for normalcy.

Thousands have lost their jobs. Many are searching for answers.

This fact remains – this crisis is a test of faith.

For Christians, this is your time, this is your season.

He has called you for such a time as this.

While the new COVID-19 case numbers and death toll escalate, those who believe in the holder of eternity are steadfast – knowing that He is in control.

Will you stand up like Aaron and hold up the arm of your leader?
