Team Fiji 7s rugby and the Fijiana teams will play warm-up matches in preparation for the Tokyo Olympics which kicks off on July 26.

Head coach Gareth Baber said there had been a lot of learning and adapting into the Games environment.

The Seremaia ‘Jerry’ Tuwai-captained side will play the opening match against Japan at 12pm (Fiji), Canada at 8pm and Great Britain at 12.30pm on July 27.

The Saiasi Fuli-coached Fijiiana women face France at 12pm and Canada at 4.30pm on July 29 and Brazil at 12pm on July 30.

“We’ve done it before, I’ll obviously follow a similar system in how you graduate back into the group from that learning,” Baber said.

“We will play some games on Thursday and Friday, mimic the timing for Olympics. We have done this several times back in Fiji.

“It works best for us, it creates a mentality and vision of going into the Olympics. It evolves around how you manage yourself in a day when you play.

He said work was in progress for Europe –based 15s players Semi Radradra, Vilimoni Botitu and Aminiasi Tuimaba.

“Obviously for those three players particularly, it has been a test of a challenge to get them where they need to be for the time they came into the Olympics itself,” he added.

Team Fiji athletes will be travelling to the Games village later in the week.

“Obviously COVID has brought pressure on that, but we still good for it.

“So going into the village, enough time, so you can get used to the village.  But too much time could becomes a distraction.

“The boys are pretty focused, we are really focused at the moment of what we going to do.

“There are limitations of what we can do. We can’t mix with anybody in the public for obvious reasons so that creates self-focus but we all know that we can overdo that at times as well.

“So creating that balance and having some fun and enjoying the space that we are in at the moment is hugely important to getting some mindset to go and perform what we need to do.”
