Former Fijian star winger Vilimoni Delasau hopes that the Team Fiji men’s rugby sevens team does not play either South Africa on the United States of America in the playoffs of the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020.

The competition gets underway next Monday.

Delasau said the Blitzboks and USA are going to be a threat in our campaign to defend the Olympic gold medal.

“Don’t get me wrong, our set of players chosen for the job is the best,” he said yesterday.

“South Africa and USA are going to be a threat to Fiji’s campaign. “Our preparations will be tested in the first match (against Japan) and that will enable us to analyse our chances.”

Delasau said we’ve the best 12 players coupled with the travelling reserves

“I urge the boys to play their hearts out and bring the gold medal home.

“It will bring more smiles especially during this tough time the country is going through,” he said.

Delasau played for the national sevens team when they won the 2005 Sevens Rugby World Cup in Hong Kong.

“We have the World Cup Sevens and the series but playing in the Olympics is the pinnacle of all.

“To win at the Olympics is the greatest achievement attained by any sportsman or sportswoman in the world,” he added.

“We all have witnessed the win at the Rio Olympics and what it did to our nation.”

Delasau who is among the best Flying Fijian wingers of all time is putting his money on rising star, Sireli Maqala, to be our go to man in Tokyo.

“Maqala is the money man. I have watched him play at the Marist and Oceania tournaments.

“He is such an elusive player. I have not seen such a caliber of player for a long time.

“He is something closer to those players we had during our playing days. I wish Gareth Baber utilizes him well.”
