Sacrifice, hardwork and resilience are the keys to the Team Fiji men’s rugby sevens team’s campaign to retain the Olympic Games 2020 gold medal in Tokyo, Japan.

This was the gist of head coach Gareth Baber’s message as the side reported to the Olympic Village in Tokyo on Thursday night.

Baber said nothing is stopping them from re-writing the history books with another gold medal win.

Speaking to SUNsports Baber said a win will lift the players and the entire nation.

“For the country I just want them to have a celebration and I believe for these players and staff as well they deserve everything,” he said.

“I know it’s not going to be easily given to us (by the other teams) but it will be a huge lift for the country if we win.”

Baber acknowledged his players for their sacrifices for the country as they want to experience the gold medal winning environment.

“These boys have been away from their families for a very long time,” he said.

“Now it’s time for them to put their bodies on the line. Things are tough at home at the moment and the national pride is intrinsically linked with the ability to get over their rivals New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and Great Britain.

“This format in sevens rugby have shown time and again that we could do that, it’s a national pride.

“It’so linked with the culture of Fiji, the history and tradition of the game of sevens around the world. I’ve been party to it in winning the series, but I’ve never been party to it at the Olympics.”
