Human rights and human behaviour are two of the biggest challenges that Fiji’s Ministry of Defence is facing during this pandemic.

Minister for Defence Inia Seruiratu said in Parliament yesterday although the war against COVID-19 was temporary, they were challenged with the amount of misinformation circulating about it.

Those spreading lies about COVID-19, he says do not have Fiji’s best interest at heart and were deliberately misleading Fijians.

“We are not in normal times and our collective security takes precedence over our individual rights,” Mr Seruiratu said.

“This is one of the biggest challenge for Fiji. It’s not so much the virus but human behaviour and human rights particularly in our campaign against COVID-19.”

Mr Seruiratu stressed that while National Federation Party MP Lenora Qereqeretabua correctly said that there is no government without the people, the war against COVID-19 is a collective and shared responsibility between government and all citizens.

He urged Fijians to step up and equally carry out the duty and responsibility of protecting the nation.

“There are two questions that I keep asking myself; Are we really patriotic as Fijians about our country, do we love Fiji and what can we do about it?”

Mr Seruiratu also spoke in support of the 2021-2022 National Budget saying it is a holistic budget that caters to everyone’s needs.

“Government has yet again and as usual put Fiji first in the 2021-2022 national budget by putting the needs of all Fijians first,” he said.

“We are a nation of resilient people. This budget provides financial prudence while gearing us towards economic stability and provides for all Fijians in this trying times.”
