Opening a bakery amidst the full-blown impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic is a way to give back to the community, says owner Shalima Bi.

Shalima Bi has opened Shell’s Bakery and Pastry’ in Nayawa, Sigatoka.

Ms Bi said she had decided to open with hopes to provide employment again to her staff from a previous venture.

A former hotel employee, she also owns and operates Shell’s Fastfood, Groceries and Liquor Shop, also in Nayawa, Sigatoka.

“After the pandemic hit, I had released all my staff from my fast-food restaurant.

“For now, the restaurant has been closed.

“It was then I decided to venture out to open a bakery.”

She said she had decided to offer bread and other pastries at an affordable price to the nearby villages.

“I also own a minimart, so I could tell people did not have a lot to spend when our revenue was down.

“The idea behind it is to give back to the community and help as much as I can with our affordable prices.”

She said the bakery followed strict COVID-19 safety protocols.

“We have our QR Code check in and check out system.

“We also follow the two metre distance and only two customers are allowed inside the bakery at once.”

Ms Bi said she has employed four of her former staff, with two new staff members.

She said she has also taken a youth under her wings to provide him with work.

The bakery is open from 5:30am to 7:30pm every day.
