President Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote’s presidential term will end in November this year.

This was confirmed by the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama yesterday.

President Konrote, who assumed office in November 2015, was reappointed to a second term in office on August 31, 2018.

According to the 2013 constitution, the President holds office for three years, and is eligible for re-appointment for one further term of three years, but is not eligible for re-appointment after that.

Republic of Fiji Military Forces Commander Rear Admiral Viliame Naupoto and Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere are rumoured to be among top choices for nominations while Ratu Epeli Ganilau could possibly be again nominated by the opposition.

The 2013 constitution, Section 84 (2) states that whenever a vacancy arises in the Office of the President, the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition shall nominate one name each to the Speaker who shall put both the names to the floor of Parliament for voting by the members of Parliament.

It further states that the person who receives the support of the majority of the members of Parliament present shall be appointed as the President, and the Speaker shall publicly announce the name of the President.

Social Democratic Liberal Party leader Viliame Gavoka said they were in continuous dialogue on names that they would consider nominating in Parliament when they are required to vote for a presidential nominee.

Mr Gavoka said this was done closely with the National Federation Party as the second political party in opposition.

President Konrote is the first non-iTaukei president to be elected by Parliament. Earlier presidents were selected by the Great Council of Chiefs.
