As of August 17, a total of about 672 personnel from the Fiji Police Force had been infected with COVID-19.

This was revealed by Minister for Defence, National Security and Policing Inia Seruiratu in Parliament.

Mr Seruiratu said out of 672, 544 have recovered while a few cases were still in home isolation or in the other facilities provided by Government.

He said about 128 active cases were still in the institution.

“Let me assure the general public that we are conscious of the fact that while performing the work, we are also can be categorised as a carrier and, of course, the possibility of spreading the disease, but that is for everyone, particularly in the red zone of our containment areas,” Mr Seruiratu said.

“All of us are possible spreaders, given the fact that we are in an exposed environment.”

He said the normal functions of the Fiji Police Force continues.

“Because of the extra responsibilities and like I said, for other organisations as well, it really helps us or even forces us to relook at the way we do things and the need for us to work smarter, the need for the force to re-prioritise, the need for the force to have the need to concentrate on where it is needed and economise in other areas as well,” he said.

He said the curfew imposed by the Government had also helped in the drop-in crime rates.
