Breach Of COVID-19 Safety Rules Could Land Organisers Of 7s Olympics Gold Medal Celebrations Into Trouble

The Fiji Police Force are tracking down on celebrations that were carried out in villages and settlements to honour members of our Team Fiji men’s rugby sevens team that won the gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
These celebrations were alleged to have breached the COVID-19 safety measures.
This became known after Sireli Maqala’s parents indicated that they were asked by the Commissioner Northern to hold their thanksgiving service within their bubble.
And they were also told that people behind the big celebrations in Viti Levu were alleged to have breached the COVID-19 safety measures and are going to be taken to task.
Commissioner of Police Brigadier- General Sitiveni Qiliho said yesterday his office was aware of such gatherings.
They will determine and issue Public Health Infringement Notices (PHINs) as they had been monitoring the celebration gathering in the West, Southern and Northern as well.
“We will be relooking at the gatherings held based on the photos and footage shared on social media and will be issuing PHINs where it is applicable,” Qiliho said.
Last Friday, a big traditional celebration was held at Nawaka Village in Nadi, to honour Meli Derenalagi.
Also, another celebration was done to Josua Vakurunabili at Vatukarasa Village in Nadroga and also at Votua Village in Ba where they welcomed Waisea Nacuqu.
The rest of the players however, celebrated with their close family members at their respective homes.
Maqala travelled to Labasa last Saturday and had to undergo a few days of quarrantine before being released yesterday.
Meanwhile, more celebrations are expected next Wednesday when the Team Fiji women’s rugby sevens team will come out of their 14-day quarrantine.
