At the Tokyo Paralympic Games, it is not about the physicality of the events, it’s about mental toughness, says Team Fiji para-athlete Iosefo Rakesa.

Rakesa will compete in the F41 category in the shot put and javelin at 12.30pm (Fiji time) next Monday while Inosi Bulimairewa Matea will compete in the javelin F63 division next Saturday.

Speaking to SUNsports the Ravitaki, Kadavu native said COVID-19 restrictions and lockdowns have helped him prepare mentally.

“The lockdown period was tough, but it was also a good thing in terms of my preparations,” Rakesa said.

“I had to relocate to my coach Fred Fatiaki’s place to train because the gym and sporting facilities were all closed.

“This is the Paralympics; the biggest sporting event and we have to be mentally strong. I’ll be competing against best from around the world, so I have to be mentally fit.”

Rakesa said his first event is in shot put.

“I’ll be taking part in the shot put and javelin but I’m good in javelin because it involves more energy. I’ve to give everything.”

Rakesa who was Team Fiji’s flag bearer in the opening ceremony said although he was proud but at same time it was scary as well since he was on international stage.

“To be the flag bearer in the opening ceremony of the Paralympics is something I will never forget,” he added.

He was accompanied by Matea and coach Fatiaki.
