World Rugby will support the Fijian Drua and Moana Pacific with $3.46m annually in the next three years.

The two teams have been included in the Super Rugby Pacific 2022 in a new competition format which was jointly released by New Zealand Rugby and Rugby Australia on Monday.

Chairman of World Rugby, Sir Bill Beaumont, congratulated the two teams in a Tweet.

Beaumont tweeted: “Congratulations to Fijian Drua & Moana Pasifika for @SuperRugby inclusion from 2022. We will support with an £1.2m ($3.46m FJD) annual funding package over an initial three-year period.”

Fiji Rugby Union is working closely with New Zealand Rugby and relevant authorities to finalise its licence which will be followed by the appointment of a head coach, chief executive officer and the squad.

The Fijian Drua was established in 2017 and won the Australian National Rugby Championship title in 2018.

Tongan-Samoan franchise, Moana Pasifika, which is made up of players who identify with Pacific Island nations and is based in South Auckland, played their first game in December 2020.

In an earlier interview with Fiji Rugby Union, chief executive officer, John O’Connor indicated they will have 37 contracted players and 28 coaching and management team.

The Fijian Drua will operate as an independent entity, albeit closely linked to Fiji Rugby Union (FRU).

The Board will be comprised of members from a yet to be confirmed private equity partner, Fiji Rugby Union and World Rugby.

Although the new entity will operate independently, there is also acknowledgement that the Fijian Drua has a major role within Fiji Rugby Union’s High-Performance pathway and will be utilised as a critical driver to the development and long term ambitions of the Flying Fijians (National XV team).
