The Greater Good Foundation Animal Sanctuary has sought assistance from corporate or individual sponsors to continue its animal sterilization campaign.

The drive is aimed at controlling an endless breeding of dogs in Lautoka City.

Greater Good Foundation Animal Sanctuary manager Maleeka Gazala said the campaign began last Friday and was a collaborative approach with the Lautoka City Council and the Ministry of Agriculture at the Lovu Sangam Hall in Vatamai, Lautoka.

“Many businesses keep dogs as security and this is wonderful, but we are pleading with them to get dogs sterilized to prevent the birth of more dogs. If they want more dogs, there are hundreds of dogs all overlooking for a place to feel safe,” she said.

Challenge

She said those who could not afford to get dogs surgically sterilized could bring a barter exchange of root crops, vegetables, or tinned food instead.

“After we purchased our drugs, we’ve broken it down and it comes to just about $40.

“So, it’s costing us $40 per dog. Other places charge more,” she said.

“That money has to come in through somewhere so we’re hoping for sponsors.”

She said 17 dogs were scheduled to be desexed on Tuesday with 18 to 20 planned per day.

“The campaign results in spaying and neutering of cats as well, however this week has been pre-booked for the surgical sterilisation of dogs.

“The city council is involved, they’ve dropped traps off,” she said

“We have qualified technicians and hope that our main vet can continue.

“It’s guaranteed for a month but if it can continue for six, that will be wonderful, so we continue to need sponsors and support from the community.”
