Minister Premila Kumar Meets The New Indian High Commissioner To Fiji

The new Indian High Commissioner to Fiji, H.E Palaniswamy Subramanyan Karthigeyan paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Education, Heritage, Arts and Local Government, Premila Kumar on Friday 3 September.

Minister Kumar congratulated H.E Karthigeyan on his appointment and wished him and his family a pleasant stay in Fiji. She acknowledged the Government of India as an important development partner not only in the education sector but in several other areas of the economy.

The Fiji – India Bilateral relations since independence has seen significant investments in the education sector, such as assistance provided towards school rehabilitation programmes, development of the India-Fiji Center for Excellence in IT at the Fiji National University and the more recent, the regional Hindi Conference organized for Hindi teachers in Primary and Secondary Schools, in 2020.

The Ministry over the years has received immense support in most of its identified priority areas and looks forward to further developments that will lead to a multi-faceted relationship.

Minister Kumar said “I must thank the Government of India for their continued support through the Indian High Commission in Fiji in the development of the Fijian education sector. Our Fijian students continue to access prominent Universities and Colleges in India through the numerous scholarship programmes offered by the Government of India. It continues to make investments in a number of sectors of the economy. I look forward to further collaboration in our education sector through the High Commission.”

Minister Kumar also expressed appreciation to the Government of India for assisting Fiji with Astra Zenaca vaccines, medical supplies as wells as other support to enable us to address the challenges caused by COVID-19 pandemic.

The two countries have always enjoyed good diplomatic standing and Fiji looks forward to strengthening this relationship further.
