In his search for alternative sources of income, businessman and restaurateur Dinesh Pillay turned a caravan into a mobile kitchen.

He opened Tata’s Uncivilised Chicken On Wheels, which replaces Nadi’s 20-year old stationary, Tata’s restaurant.

The move comes four months after his first original restaurant closed shop.

Tata’s restaurant was a wine and dine restaurant that could cater for 100 customers at a time.

The business closed following the impact of COVID-19.

Last week, Mr Pillay launched the caravan food business, which is located along Nadi Back Road.

Mr Pillay, 55, is fondly referred to as “Tata” in the business community.

In the itaukei language, Tata is a fond reference to a father figure.

Mr Pillay is president of Rotary Club of Nadi.

In November last year, he relocated his restaurant from Nadi Town to Nadi Motorex Business Center, along Nadi’s back road.

Investment
Mr Pillay invested $17,000 in his new business venture.

“If people hire me for catering, this truck enables me to provide that service,” he said.

“It is an electrical fitted truck; its kitchen meets all requirements set by the health authorities.”

Tata’s old restaurant was popular for its curries, a tradition Mr Pillay hopes to reintroduce through the caravan kitchen.

“Tata’s is known for its curries,” Mr Pillay said.

“I am finding ways to also serve curries.

“For now, we offer roti wraps, burgers, and fries, and some chinese fast food dishes.”

The eatery employs three people, who include his wife and son.

“Tata’s was well-known by all the tourists,” Mr Pillay said, while sharing his sentiments about the reopening of the international borders in the coming months.

The caravan opens from 8am to 6pm daily.
