The 2020 Olympic Games gold medalist and Police officer, Waisea Nacuqu, has been released on bail by the Magistrates Court in Ba.

The Fiji 7s rugby team playmaker is facing one count of driving under the influence of alcohol under section 103 (1A) and 114 of the Land Transport Act.

In an earlier statement, Police said it would investigate to decide the fate of Nacuqu in the force.

He appeared before Resident Magistrate, Samuela Qica yesterday.

It is alleged that the 7s rugby star was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol in Ba on Saturday morning when he was stopped at a Police checkpoint by officers.

Police Prosecutor, Woman Police Constable (WPC) Venu Singh sought leave from the court to serve the disclosures.

Defence counsel, Isoa Tikoca who represented Nacuqu confirmed receiving the disclosures.

Ms Singh also suggested to the court that the case be transferred to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) because the accused was a Police officer and prosecution could not handle files of Police officers who were accused persons.

Magistrate Qica said the decision was upon the prosecution and that his case was of public interest because the accused person was a police officer.

Magistrate Qica granted a $500 bail bond, and the accused was told not to reoffend, not to change his address and to report to the Ba Police Station on Saturday’s between 6am to 6pm.

The matter is adjourned to November 24.
