Social Welfare Officer Ms Seini Lewatoga visited the Fire Victim Ms Anita Devi at Wainibuku.

The Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Honorable Rosy Akbar today assured that Ms. Anita Devi who recently was impacted by a fire at her Wainibuku home has been visited by the Department of Social Welfare Staff several times since she found out about the case.

“My staff have been working with Ms. Devi in trying to find her accommodation and also in processing a Fire Relief Assistance that could cater for her immediate needs.”

“We thank the HART Home for coming on board to give Ms. Devi a house in one of their facilities.”

“However, Ms. Devi has been going back and forth on her decision to go to HART and we take her latest refusal as her final decision to remain where she has been.”

“We were told that some donors have offered her a land and assistance to build her a home, and that’s the option she wishes to take.”

“We cannot forcefully remove her from the current shelter.”

“Once we receive the official Fire report from the National Fire Authority, we will release her Relief assistance which she can use for her immediate needs”

Ms Anita Devi,46, is a Social Welfare Recipient receiving $35 Cash and $50 Food Voucher monthly.

While responding to the Ministry staff, Ms Devi thanked the Ministry and says she will stay at the shelter provided by Mr Dutt.

The building structure belongs to Mr. Krishna Dutt, the same person who owns the van Ms. Devi took shelter in after her house burned down.

Ms. Devi said that she is very grateful to Minister Akbar for assisting and sending her staff to visit her and this shows government’s quick response to assist the needy.
