The Ministry of Health and Medical Services Permanent Secretary, Dr James Fong, was impressed with the people of Lau Province who came forward in numbers to get their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Dr Fong thanked the people of Lau for their dedication and commitment.

“The rapid escalation of doses in Lau has been very impressive for the first dose coverage rates,” Dr Fong said.

“As I understand most of the fake news and conspiracy theories have been propagated through social media with influencers playing a big role.

“However, much of the impact has been due to the support of the Vanua…the leaders and the people of Lau have demonstrated a community spirit that bodes well for the future health of Fijians.”

Area Medical Officer Dr Raynold Waisale and his team were on the ground vaccinating villages in Southern Lau.

He said it was encouraging to see villagers in numbers ready to be vaccinated.
