The Bula Ko Lau virtual Concert on Saturday was able to raise more than $20,000.

This was confirmed by their spokesperson Samisoni Pareti yesterday.

The purpose of the virtual concert was to raise funds to buy personal protective equipment (PPE) for people in the Lau group and support the Lauans who are currently displaced from their homes due to the lockdowns and travel restrictions.

The concerts were also meant to help musicians around the country who have been without work due to the pandemic’s effects on our tourism and food/beverage industry.

Mr Pareti said they would know the exact amount when they do an audit today.

“This is an achievement and we thank everyone that tuned in and donated,” Mr Pareti said.

“Everyone is going through a tough time, so we targeted our diasporas and we were happy with everyone that joined in.

“We will be buying about 15,000 to 20,000 PPEs for our Lauan people back home. We will also be organising food packs. We will not be able to help everyone, but we will try and do everything we can from what we were able to raise.

“The PPEs will be for children as young as six years old to adults.”

Mr Pareti also thanked the musicians who participated.

“We will make sure that all the money will be accounted for,” he said.

“We have world-class artists and I am proud of them. We would like to thank them for giving their time to perform during the virtual concert.

“We also want to thank the Fiji Council Social Services for coming onboard.”

Because of the difficulties in connectivity their livestream was ceased half an hour earlier.

The two remaining artist groups – Georgina Ledua and Jim Ratusila and Hanisi Maloney – will perform now on livestream on the Bula Ko Lau Facebook page at 8pm on Thursday.
