A 28-year-old private electrician in Labasa has diversified into selling sea crabs amid this financially exhausting COVID-19 pandemic.

Ramendra Prasad, originally from Nasarawaqa in Bua, currently rents in Siberia, Labasa, due to his work commitments and various other opportunities available in Labasa to earn an income.

He purchases crabs from a supplier in Bua on a weekly basis after which he sells them off in Labasa Town and other residential areas in the province.

Mr Prasad said his family back home in Bua fully understands the struggles he is faced with in terms of paying rent, buying weekly groceries and other basic household necessities.

“When I have surplus money with me, then I am able to send some money over to them for their expenses,” he said.

“Regardless of being a private electrician, the pandemic has really affected my work because of the decline in demand for private electrical works during this time,” he said.

Mr Prasad encouraged people to transition into doing regular odd jobs to survive through this financial crisis.

“We cannot be dependent on our specialised job only, because the demand and its relevance are affected by the situation we go through daily,” he stated.

Mr Prasad sells this delicious seafood delicacy at a price range falling between $15-$18 per kilogram, which he stated was an affordable price, considering the size of the crabs and their demand.

“I believe in sheer hard work and perseverance as life is such that money plays a significant role in catering for one’s needs and wants,” he said.

Mr Prasad added that he was hoping to expand his seafood side business by increasing his seafood supply to customers.
