Reserve Bank of Fiji Governor, Ariff Ali, has been appointed board member to the Alliance for Financial Inclusion – a global leading organisation that aims to improve lives of the poor through financial inclusion.

Mr Ali is one of four new board members whose appointment was ratified by the alliance’s membership council on September 8, during the sixth annual general meeting.

Mr Ali said Fiji’s representation was expected to bring more visibility to the small island economy.

He joins his new counterparts on the board who include:
– Banque Centrale de la République de Guinée governor, Lounceny Nabe.

– Central Bank of Tunisia deputy governor, Nadia Gamha, and

– National Bank of Cambodia deputy governor, Neav Chantana

The four make up the 10 members on the board of directors.

Mr Ali said RBF joined AFI, a network of over 100 financial regulatory and policymaking institutions from over 90 countries, in 2009.

“Fiji was also a member of AFI’s first regional initiative, the Pacific Islands Regional Initiative (PIRI), primarily comprising central banks in the Pacific,” he said.

“Through our membership, the RBF has benefited immensely through support from the organisation and its member countries towards development of our national financial inclusion initiatives and strategies, capacity building, access to technical resources, knowledge exchanges, in-country implementation grant funding and access to a network of strategic global partners.

“The privilege of serving on the AFI Board not only allows us to give back to the international network, but enables us to share Fiji’s experiences and contribute towards shaping the future of financial inclusion at a global level.”

Each term is two years long.
