Thumbs Up For Holy Cross Teachers

Dakuniba Village headman Viliame Eriki has heaped praises on teachers of Holy Cross College on Taveuni Island for braving all odds to deliver worksheets to their students.
Early this week a cluster of teachers from all departments travelled by ferry to reach Dakuniba Village at Buca Bay, Cakaudrove, in Vanua Levu.
Mr Eriki said children on the island, including parents, were happy.
“We have been really worried about our children because some have lost interest in education and took up farming seriously,” Mr Eriki said.
“When the teachers sat down with students not only did, they complete their worksheets, but they managed to discuss problems.”
He praised teachers for taking the time to encourage their children to choose education.
It takes 45 minutes to reach the island and cost $50.
Tomasi Takala joined Holy Cross College as a principal this year after spending two years at Suva Sangam College.
The college has a roll of 511 students from Year Nine to 13, who come from 21 villages and taught by 35 teachers.
Mr Takala said the school provided transport for the teachers and they have reached 18 villages.
“Teachers follow all COVID-19 protocols and measures and are happy to reach out to their students,” Mr Takala said.
“We have been doing this for a long time but avoided being in the limelight.”
He said when teachers checked the worksheets they had a fair idea of how the students were doing and those who needed additional support.
