Mesulame Domonakibau and his family will not have to worry anymore about proper shelter on rainy days.

This is after they settled into a new home, thanks to the partnership between 1Love Fiji Foundation and Make a Difference Fiji.

The family of four, who resides at Navoli Settlement in Ba have been living in a squalid makeshift shack and in unsanitary conditions since 2016.

The shack they live in had no privacy, little protection from the weather, and is built directly on the ground which gets inundated when it rains.

“Finally, our prayers have been answered,” said an emotional Mr Domonakibau.

“For a long time, we wanted to live in this kind of new home. Now we won’t be fixing the roof because of rainwater sipping inside the house.”

The new home project came at a cost of $5,900.

Mr Domonakibau is a cane cutter during the crushing season. He is thankful to the good samaritan for their kind and good heart.

“My family is ever grateful to those who have assisted us in a tough time like this, especially during the pandemic,” he said.

Make a Difference

Make a Difference Fiji (MADF) west coordinator Ash Singh said that MADF undertook the project with the funding from 1Love Fiji Foundation.

She said the project has been completed albeit complications and delays caused by the COVID-19 outbreak.

“Even when faced with such adversity, Fijians have banded together to show their resilient spirit – as they always have during trying times,” said Ms Singh.

1Love Fiji Foundation’s founder Rajiv Naidu said 1LFF was unique in the sector of small not-for-profit organisations because it is a niche project management charity, therefore, operates as a business.

He added the board is made up of well-established and highly experienced Fijians from Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore.
