Suva was busy as scores of people rushed into the Capital City after borders within Viti Levu were opened yesterday.

Farmers and vendors from Naitasiri rushed to the market, bus loads of people arrived at the Suva Bus Stand- the city itself was busy.

Suva Retailers Association president Jitesh Patel said there were more people in the city and it did look like some retailers benefitted from the borders being lifted.

“We do realise that people from some areas had not been able to come to Suva for more than five months,” he said.

“But while retailers enjoyed a good crowd, we had reminded members not to become complacent and always follow the COVID safe protocols.”

Suva Market

Suva City Council market teams and enforcement officers had a busy day and expect an even busier day today.

As the ‘No Jab No Sell’ policy still stands for all municipal markets, vendors had to be checked if they had their first jab.

The council also ensured that vendors who had been turned away did not start selling illegally on the streets of Suva.

Minister for Local Government Premila Kumar urged all vendors coming to the municipal markets to be vaccinated before the end of October.

She said there was no stall fee to be charged.

Nausori

Nausori Town Council chief executive Anurashika Bari said the policy was the same for all vendors and it was mandatory to adhere to COVID-safe guidelines.

“All vendors must be registered, we have made ID cards which they must wear at all times,” she said.

Vunidawa villager Adi Vani Rokoiseru said it was good to return to the market and be able to sell their products to earn money for their families.
