The Maramarua Community in Vanua Levu last week conveyed their heartfelt gratitude to the Director and Dean of the South Pacific Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Dr Zhihui Tu, and his team. This is because Dr Tu and team were instrumental in the rehabilitation of Maramarua District School.

Background

Dr Tu conducted a Disaster Relief Photography Exhibition in Nadi in January, where he encouraged support from the Chinese Community in Fiji in reaching out to families in the Northern Division who were affected by Tropical Cyclone Yasa.

In addition to that, he made a visit to the North, taking 20 members of his volunteer team and visited various villagers donating food rations and medicine supplies.

It was during that visit, he identified schools which were destroyed or damaged by the tropical cyclone and aimed to help their rehabilitation. One of those schools were Maramarua District School.

His team co-operated with the Ministry of Education on the Disaster Relief Programme.

Maramarua Community grateful

With the completion of Maramarua District School Rehabilitation Programme, 1 by 7 classrooms and a kindergarten were rehabilitated and renewed.

The school head teacher, Semi Goletoka, said it was a timely assistance and it was very special to the school.

“Your timely assistance is very special to the school and its community as we go through a very challenging time,” he said.

Dr Tu said it was the first time that the Chinese Communities helped to rehabilitate and renew a damaged school in Fiji.
