A Suva man is calling on authorities and owners of the WG Friendship Plaza to have better safety measures in place.

Kevin Hon of Suva made the call after a piece of cement block fell from the top floors of what is to be Suva’s highest building.

Mr. Hon said the incident happened around 10am at McGregor Road in Suva just outside the WG Tower.

“I was driving towards Suva when a piece of cement block or rock fell next to my car. I swerved and almost lost control,” he said.

Mr. Hon claimed the incident happened because there were no safety nettings on the building stopping the rubbles from falling onto the road and the footpath.

He said he was lucky, but he feels that if safety measures were not taken other people could get hurt.

Mr. Hon also made a complaint to the Suva City Council.

WG Friendship Plaza manager Julien Yuen said this was an unfortunate incident. He said the company always emphasised on the importance of safety at work.

He said the incident yesterday morning happened because the winds were strong, but a reminder has been given to the employees.
