The Republic of Fiji Military Forces handed over a cheque to the members of the Returned Soldiers and Ex-Servicemen Association (RSEA) as part of the 100th year Anniversary of the Poppy Appeal at the Headquarters RFMF Berkley Crescent on Thursday 7th October 2021.

The youngest soldier in the RFMF, Bands Woman (BDSW) Eleni Naleba who hails from Nailuva Village in Ra, was given the honor to present the token of appreciation on behalf of the Commander RFMF (CRFMF) to the RSEA for their initiatives towards the 100th year Anniversary to coincide with Remembrance Day 2021 celebrations.

In her address, she said that it was a pleasure to hear stories of fathers and grandfathers during their time in the military and of their tours.
BDSW Naleba remembers seeing an ex-serviceman and the number of medals he had and has come to appreciate the sacrifice they make as some paid the price for the peace we now enjoy with their very own life.

β€œSometimes when I stand beside an ex-serviceman, I try to silently observe him from the top downwards. I always see the number of medals they have and always wonder, what it would be like when I reach that age. But the sight of an ex-serviceman is always pleasant and we always say to ourselves, the peace we enjoy today, you paid the price for it and some with their very own life.”

A representative from the RSEA, retired Warrant Officer Class 2 Vula Tabuadua said that the fund donated will help in the preparation for the 100 years of the Poppy Appeal commemoration for veterans that have served in the armed forces. The fund will also assist in the welfare and expenses of running the association which has 22 branches around Fiji.

β€œThe donation received today will actually boost our preparation for the November 11 event and help the 22 branches around the country,” retired WO2 Tabuadua said.
Notable figures also present at the occasion were the Minister of Defence Lieutenant Colonel Inia Seruiratu, the CRFMF Major General Jone Kalouniwai, Senior Officers, and Officers of the force.

Since its inception in 1921, the poppy is a symbol of respect and honour in the Commonwealth countries for those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice and service in world wars and in peacekeeping.
