Former SODELPA supporters elected to lead the Nadi People’s Alliance Party during the party’s national launch at Nawaka Village in Nadi on October 11, 2021.

A traditional welcoming protocol was conducted by the Vanua of Nalagi at Nawaka Village for the national launch of the People’s Alliance Party yesterday.

Most supporters in Nadi, who were once supporters of the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA), have joined Sitiveni Rabuka’s party. Three of them were elected to lead the party in Nadi.

Their president is Sekove Tuilakeba, Vice president, Salacieli Rawalui and Secretary, Titilia Vuetaki. All three were former members of SODELPA Nadi.

Mr Rabuka, as Party Leader, said there was a tremendous support from the west and they had amassed over 10,000 signatures.

“Many of those youthful idealists and other volunteers walked the length and breadth of the country to collect signatures for an application for registration as a political party,” he said.

“Some critics were predicting we would run into a brick wall, especially because of the constraints caused by COVID-19.

“How wrong they were. We amassed over 10,000 signatures, more than double the legal requirement.”

He said when they lodged their application with the Office of the Supervisor of Elections, there were hardly any objections.

Mr Rabuka commended the support from the Tui Nawaka, Ratu Asaeli Driu and the Tui Nadi Ratu Vuniyani Navuniuci.

Meanwhile, the Tui Nadi who was the chief guest at the launching said the party started its drive for the rebuilding of the country.

Ratu Navuniuci said before the party can get a grip with the restoration of Fiji, it has to win the support of the people.

“We must gain enough parliamentary seats in the elections due probably next year to form a government. Let us all dedicate ourselves to working together, under the guidance of our party leader to bring relief, work, prosperity and happiness to Fiji,” he said.

More than a hundred people attended the event.
