A family of three are fighting for their lives at the Lautoka Hospital after a black twin cab allegedly veered off the road and hit them at Velovelo, Lautoka yesterday.

An eyewitness, who wished to remain anonymous, said the sight of the accident traumatised her deeply.

“The accident happened at ten past seven, I heard a loud crash. It was a twin cab travelling from Lautoka towards Nadi and a family of three were standing on the tramline; the parents and one son. The twin cab overtook a probox and hit all of them,” she said.

She said the impact of the accident catapulted the child to the front of a gate leading to an industrial site just metres away from where his parents lay near the tramline. She alleged that the vehicle veered across the road hitting another man who was standing at the bus shelter.

“The wife is at the ICU, she was bleeding from her ear and the father was bleeding from the back of his head and the little boy had scratches, but he fell,” she said.

She said a bystander helped transport the victims to the Lautoka Hospital

“What happened is still fresh in my mind. There should be a road hump, crossing or at least a speed camera,” she said.

Police media officer Wame Bautolu confirmed the incident.

“A 45-year-old man of Tavarau, Ba lost control of his vehicle near Velovelo, Lautoka, and hit three people standing by the road and they have been taken to hospital while the driver is being questioned as investigations continue,” he said.

Mr Bautolu said Police were still gathering information on the incident.
