About 48,000 passengers have booked to fly to Fiji via Fiji Airways this December, said Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

On Friday, he said some of these passengers were booked for early December, while others are coming just before Christmas and many more are expected to arrive post-Christmas.

Hope

He added that while this was a great sign of recovery, they had their fingers crossed that it would come to fruition.

“Our ability to be able to say tourists can come to Fiji from December 1 would have been hugely undermined if we did not have a national carrier,” he said.

“Because as we saw that Qantas announced after the Prime Minister’s announcement that they will come in the middle of December, Jet Airways said that they would jet out on the third week of December and Virgin announced a few weeks later in December.

“So our ability as a nation to be able to dictate travel and facilitate travel is only actually possible when we have a national carrier.

“Imagine if we do not have a carrier, we would be subject to the whims and fancies and financial considerations of foreign airlines.”

He said our national airline gave us control of ourselves as a sovereign nation.

“In fact I sit in anguish when I hear the opposition have a go at Fiji Airways,” he said.

“They don’t look at the big picture. As a result of the announcement we have seen that hotels are re-employed.

“We are seeing the gardeners coming in cleaning the gardeners in hotels.

“We are seeing the chefs being brought back. We are seeing people excited on the streets in Nadi, so they can sell coconuts to the tourists, the ladies selling their handicraft, they’re getting all excited.”

Minister for Commerce, Trade, Tourism and Transport Faiyaz Koya said in the last 11 days nearly 90 per cent of bookings for Fiji Airways flights and holiday packages were made by Australians.
