Kaliyan Naickar had just commemorated the passing of his mother one day before losing his entire corrugated iron and timber home in a fire.

Mr Naickar, resides with his wife, Komal Gounder, their three children and his elderly father at Nadovi, Sonaisali in Nadi. His five-bedroom home was destroyed at around 3pm on Monday.

He is a garage owner and is the sole breadwinner of the family.

He said his family remembered his mum in a memorial service on Sunday after losing her three months ago and he was not expecting to lose his home the next day.

“I was just returning from the sea after catching some fish and on my way home. I saw smoke near my home,” he said.

“I parked on the main road and ran towards the smoke and that was when I knew it was my home on fire.

He added, at his garage six cars belonging to his customers were also destroyed.

The estimated cost of damage will be about $60,000.

National Fire Authority chief executive officer, Puamau Sowane said: “The current dry and windy weather conditions in the Western Division have been the major contributing factors for the quick spread of fire damage,” said Mr Sowane.
