Schools may open earlier then January 4, 2022.

Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts Premila Kumar yesterday confirmed that they were working on a strategy to get our students back into classrooms given the increase in fully vaccinated adults and students.

Even though vaccination for children was not mandatory, and was a precautionary measure, she said the more students opted to get vaccinated, the quicker in-person learning could start.

“We are working with the Ministry of Health and Medical Services and are keeping a close watch on the vaccination rates amongst students, given that the required vaccine roll-out has started. We would be at ease once more students are vaccinated in a school with fully vaccinated teachers and ancillary staff,” she said.

“We are currently pursuing avenues and are discussing options on how we can have our students back in classrooms earlier than January 4th.”

She also confirmed that random COVID-19 testing for teachers and students would also be held in schools, facilitated by heath centres closest to the schools.

She said the reason behind this was to ensure a close tab was kept on the health of students and teachers and for early detection of any COVID-19 cases.

School reopening dates announced earlier were November 1 for Year 12 and 13; January 4 for students in kindergarten to Year 11.
