Money has been extorted from people through a blackmail scam where the target have been homosexual and bisexual men.

It is believed that the local man at the centre of the scam has also extorted money from men in Australia and New Zealand.

This is now part of a Police investigation.

A young man, who ended up paying $400 to the alleged scam artist, said he was approached by the man on social media.

“He started chatting with me. After a while he said he was gay. I told him that I too was gay but was yet to come out of the closet and have kept it from the family,” he said.

“He screenshotted all my messages and started threatening me that he would expose me to my family.”

The young man paid him $200. This was followed by another demand of $300. The young man paid only $200.

He was then demanded to pay $500 as a last payment and put an end to the extortion.

At that point, the young man told the alleged blackmailer that he had enough of his threats  and did not care about his threats. The young man blocked the alleged scam artist.

In another case, screenshots of nude videos of a man sent between the victim and the scam artist were being used to extort the money.

This matter was reported to the Police.

The modus operandi of the scam artist is that he targets men who tend to be homosexual and then uses the pics and messages sent to blackmail them for money.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed the matter was under investigation.
