Schools could possibly be open for Early Childhood Education (ECE) and Years 1 to 11 on November 29.

This is if more children and adults get vaccinated and if active COVID-19 cases decrease.

Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts Premila Kumar made this announcement on Friday.

She said if this does not eventuate, then classes for ECE and Years 1 to 11 would have to begin on January 4.

Year 12, Year 13

Opening of school for Years 12 and 13 is from next Monday, November 1.

She said the coming school term was important for Year 12 and 13 students as they prepared to sit for their external examinations next year.

She said school principals and teachers have been trained and are well versed with COVID-19 safe guidelines for schools as they prepare to welcome children back on Monday.

These guidelines include wearing masks, washing hands, no hugs, and no shaking of hands.

“There will be more awareness and education done on this part,” she said.

“Some of the classrooms are crowded but we are trying to ensure that there is cross ventilation. Most schools have fans, some have started doing this too, but masking up and sanitising is what we are going to continue to ensure is done.

“Sitting has to be 1.3 metres apart but if that is not possible, we can use extra spaces like corridors, I’m sure our teachers are innovative with how they can be arranged.”

Contracts terminated

Ministry for Education Permanent Secretary Anjeela Jokhan revealed that the ministry had to terminate the contracts of 50 Year 12 and 13 teachers who did not want to get vaccinated.

Ms Jokhan said replacements for these teachers have been found.

She added that 99 teachers had requested for vaccine exemption on medical grounds which the Ministry of Health was looking into.
