It really feels good to be back in school.

This was the sentiment shared by Ballantine Memorial School year 12 student Perina Matai as she walked into the school premises yesterday afternoon.

Ms Matai was part of the students that were personally welcomed by Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts Premila Kumar at the school yesterday.

The 17-year-old had been home with her parents in Vuma village, Levuka in Ovalau for the past six and a half months of school closure.

She described the experience of home learning on the island as one she would never forget.

“It was difficult at some point because we were in Levuka and my teachers were in Suva, sometimes the internet connection was a problem but I am grateful for my teachers who tried their best to ensure that we were sent worksheets and online learning continued,” she said.

She said she looked forward to starting school again and to be back in the classroom learning with all my friends.

Ms Matai left Ovalau last week through a special travel pass by the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Health and Medical Services to travel through as school reopened yesterday.

Salome Naitoko, 17, from Naceva village in Beqa was also excited to be back in school yesterday.

The Year 12 student said she was excited to receive the news of school reopening and was glad to be back for face to face learning.

“My parents had helped me a lot when I was in Beqa during the lockdown and my teachers also ensured that we continued learning during the pandemic, for that I am really grateful.”
