Tomuka residents in Lautoka are pleading with relevant authorities to construct speed humps along their road.

After the completion of the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) $300,000 road project Tomuka, residents found that motorists were going beyond speed limits.

The recent project involved the resurfacing and reconstruction of the road.

Tomuka resident, Semi Ravulo, has been residing in the area with his wife Rejieli and their family for 40 years.

“The road was in a bad condition before but now it is alright, we only need one thing now, the speed breakers,” Mr Ravulo said.

“The drivers are speeding now after the road has been completed.

“Before during the hot weather, the dust would always affect us because we live near the road.”

Another resident, Shabana Ali said previously the condition of the road would cause a lot of damage to vehicles.

“If there are humps it will be good for drivers and residents too.

“I have been residing in Tomuka for 17 years and the condition of the road has always been bad.”

FRA acting chief executive officer, Kamal Prasad said a safety audit which had been undertaken would provide recommendations with the residents request to construct speed humps.

“The safety audit will also look at pedestrian traffic safety improvement,” he said.

Mr Prasad is urging all motorists to drive at the designated speed limit.
