A Year 12 student of a school in the Western Division is believed to be the first student to have been diagnosed with the COVID-19 virus since the reopening of schools to Year 12 and Year 13 students.

Information received by the Fiji Sun from a member of the Lautoka-based school is that the male student was suffering from severe pain on Monday.

The student was then attended to by school staff at the sick-bay where he was later transported to the Lautoka Hospital.

Thereafter, parents alerted the school that he had contracted the COVID-19 virus. Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, Dr James Fong could not confirm this, but highlighted that if the information was true, usual protocols would be applied and contact tracing would be activated.
