Konrote Ends Term, Says Honoured To Serve People, Nation

It was a fitting farewell to outgoing President Major General (Retired) Jioji Konrote as he finished his second term and made way for Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere.
President Konrote in his departing words said it was an honour to be Fiji’s chief servant.
The farewell ceremony started with an inspection of the parading soldiers accompanied by the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai.
This was followed by a traditional protocol including the presentation of a tabua and a yaqona ceremony.
“I leave with a great sense of humble recognition and satis- faction that my wife Sarote and I had tried our best to serve you well with compassion, honesty, genuine concern and dignity,” he said.
“About six years ago, when I was entrusted with this most prestigious, equally important, demanding and reverent appointment of this highest office of the land, I graciously and humbly accepted the challenge because I believe that the Almighty God had destined and groomed me well to continue and end my five decades of loyal service to our nation and people, as Fiji’s chief servant.
“Personally, I would like to formally acknowledge and thank the Prime Minister and Government for the beloved nation and people – and we depart the State House with humility and a sense of satisfaction that at least we had tried our best to serve you well in upholding the integrity and dignity of this institution.”
