19-year old fashion and art aspirant won the Student Designer of the year award at the Wearing Fiji fashion show,  in Suva at the weekend.

Sara Du was among 11 other students on a 10 week mentoring programme run by Wearing Fiji.

The mentoring programme culminated in the fashion show that drew hundreds to the Grand Pacific Hotel.

Ms Du was mentored by Samson Lee, who was among  some establishled designers on the programme.

Other established designers of the programme included Robert Verebasaga, Natalia Larson and Atelaite  Daunibau.

The result of 10 weeks of fashion mentoring  was displayed on the catwalk in a show that lasted over an hour.

“Keeping the theme Tropical Chaos in mind, I wanted to design a resort wear collection,” Ms Du said.

“The fabric given to us  was very soft and light which I tried highlighting with very feminine designs that are comfortable and flow well along the body.

“I think my collection was very wearable straight off the runway which may have been the winning point.”

Ms Du is studying medical science at University of Sydney.

She hopes to also pursue a  fashion career while in Sydney, Australia.

Co-founder of Wearing Fiji Neisau Tuidraki said the student designer category opened the show.

“Sara’s winning design featured an asymmetrical wraparound, ruffled summer skirt and halter neck dress,” Ms Tuidraki said.

“Our highlight is being the first major show in Suva coming out of lockdown, we had to work with Grand Pacific Hotel and the relevant ministries to be COVID safe.”
