Ratepayers Happy With Council

Residents of Nasinu are happy that the Suva City Council (SCC) garbage collection service has not been lacking.
It is now more than a year since the SCC has been collecting garbage from the Nasinu area.
The $2.4 million deal of which the Government was providing $1.6 million and the rest provided by the Nasinu Town Council was signed in September 2020.
The deal was for a year and has now been extended.
Suresh Singh of Laucala Beach said he could recall how garbage used to pile up in their streets for days.
“This was a good move by the Government because Nasinu Town Council’s garbage collection was not regular,” he said.
“Most areas in Nasinu started looking dirty.”
Narere resident Letila Seavula said they hoped that SCC would continue the rubbish collection in the area.
“From the time SCC started their collection, it has been regular. More than a year ago, people would continue to pile rubbish on top of an existing pile,” she said.
To carry out the task in Nasinu, SCC had to ensure that services within its own municipality did not get affected.
Suva has 11,400 ratepayers compared to 11,200 from Nasinu. Suva rates are four times higher than Nasinu rates.
This has led to Suva collecting rates up to $15 million while Nasinu’s amount to $3.5 million annually.
In comparison Suva’s rate collection stands at 82 per cent for the past financial year.
Meanwhile, a rubbish pile which had started to build up in Caubati and highlighted by the Fiji Sun this week, has been removed by the SCC.
