For Lautoka couple, Mareta and Jifa Tupua, having to send their only child, Lucieann to St John’s College from them to begin her secondary education four years ago was tough.

But it was for character-building and the idea by Mr Tupua, being an ex-scholar of the boarding school in Cawaci, Ovalau, was to help Lucieann become independent and prepared for the future.

Today, they don’t regret making that decision.

The 17-year-old head girl of the college has become the young woman her parents hoped to have, continuing to inspire them.

The recent achievement by the Lakeba, Lau native was becoming a silver medalist in the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2021.

Her essay was titled ‘The New Norm’ using the concept of matavuvale (family).

The Year 13 student said her daily prayers and motivation together with encouragement by her parents scored her the lifetime award.

“My parents encouraged me to write, they told me it would help me in the future, especially now in getting achievements and I enjoy writing essays, this also inspired me to also try out writing for competitions,” she said.

“My essay was about family, I used the matavuvale (family) concept because in the family we are cared for and supported by each other in a compassionate manner and it is also interconnected to the Commonwealth because we also share the same key values.”

“I have been home since April, I wrote the essay while at home during the pandemic in June.”

She said being away from home was her biggest challenge.

“Having to hold the role of head girl, sometimes I just needed my parents the most, but it helped me to be independent,” she added.

Lucieann aspires to be a pilot.

She expects to return to school this weekend.
