A second too late would have spelt disaster for 70-year-old Makata and his nephew Ilisoni Yacadra, 57, when they jumped clear of harm’s way from the path of an oncoming, out of control three-tonne truck on Wednesday morning.

The two men were at a bus shelter in Nabuiniikadamu in Wainunu, Bua, when out of nowhere, a truck headed toward the bus stop at top speed.

Had the men not seen the vehicle in time, it would likely result in either death or serious injuries.

The two were still in a state of shock.

District representative of Wainunu, Bua, Epeli Mataiwalu said he had received a phone call that his older brother had been in an accident and was rushed to the hospital.

“After receiving the phone call, I did not take it lightly and decided to make calls to ascertain as to what had happened that morning,” Mr Matawalu said.

“Apparently a carrier driven by a drunk driver had lost control of the vehicle which crashed into the bus stop where my brother and our nephew were waiting.

“When they saw the carrier heading towards them, they jumped out of the way and sustained minor injuries in the process.”

Mr Matawalu said the duo were taken to Wainunu Health Centre then to Nabouwalu Hospital.

Both men are at their homes now.

Mr Matawalu is now urging drivers to be mindful of other road users.

He said some times innocent people suffer due to irresponsible and careless driving.

Meanwhile, the driver has been taken in for questioning by Police.
