Serevi For 7s Job?
Rugby 7s maestro Waisale Serevi.

Sevens maestro Waisale Serevi, could be in the running for the new Fiji Airways Fijian men’s rugby sevens team head coach.

SUNsports had been reliably informed that Serevi has applied for the job.

In his application, Serevi had indicated that he would want to have 2016 Olympic Games gold medallist and captain Osea Kolinisau along with dual Olympic gold medallists, Jerry Tuwai as his assistant coaches.

Serevi and Kolinisau are the only Fijian players to be inducted in the World Rugby Hall of Fame.

When contacted yesterday Fiji Rugby Union chief executive officer John O’Connor was tightlipped on Serevi’s application.

“We will review (7s coach’s) applications next week and follow the due process,” O’Connor said.

“We are focused on our annual general meeting, our national sevens teams for Dubai and also on the Flying Fijians.”

According to sources, Serevi also indicated in his application that he is targeting the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, Sevens Rugby World Cup in South Africa and the 2024 Olympic Games in France.

The Fijians have twice won the Olympic Games gold medal and the Sevens RWC title but is yet to win the Commonwealth Games gold medal. Arch rivals and Olympic Games silver medallist, New Zealand are the Commonwealth Games gold medal winners and the defending Sevens RWC champions.

This was one of the goals Serevi had highlighted in his application for the 7s head coach’s job.

His other goal was to introduce a holistic approach in the way the Fijian 7s team are led.

In this Serevi stated, he not only want to develop good players but better men in their communities, villages, settlements, towns, cities and to the nation as a whole.

Serevi also indicated that part of his plan is to win a couple of tournaments in the HSBC World Sevens Series.

The Qarani, Gau native has played 39 Tests for the Flying Fijians between 1989 and 2003 and scored 376 points. This included representing Fiji at the 1991, 1999, and 2003 Rugby World Cups.

He has been World Rugby’s ambassador in promoting sevens rugby around the globe included the United States where he is now based with Kolinisau.

Serevi has been helping coach minnows like Jamaica, China and Russia in the World Sevens Series.

In recent interviews, he had expressed his willingness to assist Fiji if he is needed.

It is understood that Tuwai had indicated to FRU, that he would continue playing as he wants Fiji to win the Commonwealth Games gold medal and the Sevens RWC.

Serevi has captained the national sevens team when they won the Melrose Cup (Sevens RWC title) in 1997 and 2005.

He also coached the national sevens team when they won the first World Sevens Series title in 2005.

He returned to coach Fiji in July 23, 2008 and was dismissed on January 29, 2009 by the then FRU board under the chairmanship of Keni Dakuidreketi after Serevi disputed on why he was left out of the selection of players for national duties. He was replaced by Iliesa Tanivula.

It is understood that a number of overseas coaches have expressed their interest but so far no local-based coach have applied.
