The hype of tourist arrivals next month and the re-generation of business are what the Yellow Taxi owners and drivers are eagerly awaiting. These are the cabs that are usually seen outside the international arrivals area at the Nadi International Airport to pick up passengers.

After a lapse of 34 months thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, the cab drivers are ready to return to business.

They took the first step on Saturday when its members, taxi owners, received their careFIJI accreditation at the Nadi International Airport.

Nadi International Airport Taxi Association president, Mohammed Mustapha, said 66 drivers had to look elsewhere for jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He added only a few taxis were operating on a rotational basis as they had to provide services at the domestic terminals.

Mr Mustapha added that ever since borders shut down last year because of the pandemic, they had fought hard to cope with the situation. However, with December 1 on the horizon, they are preparing to get back to business.

“This is more than very good news as people have been looking forward to it and people had not worked for one year and 10 months. This is the time now,” he said.

“The members are happy with the decision undertaken by the government with all the required protocols to be upheld at all times. We are sure to serve our tourists. Bring it on!”

Mr Mustapha thanked Fiji Airports, Tourism Fiji, and the Ministry of Health and Medical Services in the process.

Fiji Airports Manager Airport Landside Operations and Customer Services Joe Gray said it was a significant day to see the excitement on the faces of their members.

“A milestone achievement to see the return of our resilient hard working Yellow Taxi operators and owners at the careFIJI accreditation process,” he said.

The process includes upgrading skills in customer service, including COVID-hygiene practices.

“They will be implementing and showcasing this at the Nadi International Airport. The excitement says it all that; they cannot wait for December 1,” Mr Gray said.
