Laxity in complying with mask-wearing and COVID-19 safe measures in businesses in major towns and cities is a concern the Ministry of Health and Medical Services is looking into.

A few days away from tourist arrivals on December 1, the Ministry of Health and Medical Services’ Permanent Secretary Dr James Fong said they would be taking drastic actions over the next few days to address this.

“I’ve received reports from all over Fiji that businesses are beginning to slacken down with the COVID-safe measures,” he said.

“Any business owner not complying with our COVID-safe processes is a major concern. Our teams will be monitoring compliance.

“We will be taking some actions that I am discussing at the moment with officials.”

In his Monday update, he said it is unfortunate that COVID-safe measures in public indoor spaces, public transportation and organised outdoor gatherings were now being increasingly flouted.

“Poor compliance to COVID-safe measures is now more clearly visible in major businesses facilities,” he said.

“We do expect the third wave of cases because of excessive gatherings that are going to happen over Christmas and New Year and we continue to prepare to have the wave of severe cases in hospitals.”

The ministry is pleading with the general public to embrace society-wide promotion and compliance of COVID-safe measures to ensure the third wave is small.

“While the easing of restrictions is needed to facilitate social and economic livelihood, the public must ensure that together with vaccination, we should continue to observe our COVID-safe measures and avoid contained spaces and crowds to avoid the risk of increased spread of the virus,” Dr Fong said.
