Minister for Agriculture, Environment and Waterways, Mahendra Reddy visit to the North yesterday reinforced the significance of commercial expansion and agricultural growth.

He handover offer letters to 11 recipients as part of the Commercial Agricultural Programme in Labasa.

Seven recipients received land clearing development grant, two women groups were assisted for the Women in Agriculture programme ,and two orchard development recipients received their agricultural support grant.

Mr Reddy said they continued to assist farmers and interested individuals to increase their commercial food production.

He said they mobilised machinery with the help of advisor councillors to ensure food security issues are reduced for farmers in rural areas.

“We have also provided seed packs and other necessary resources to households as part of the home gardening programme,” Mr Reddy said.

Land Clearing Development Grant
Land Clearing grant recipient Atunaisa Tunayau said the grant would help clear 10 acres of unproductive land.

He expects to use the cultivated land to grow vegetables, ginger, coconut trees and ginger for commercial purposes.

The Satulaki villager from Cakaudrove, said the assistance would provide his family an opportunity to increase their income.

The family hopes to make money from crops they will plant on the cleared land.

Mr Reddy said the grant was intended to ensure unproductive land is converted and brought under the Ministry for productive use.

Orchard Development
Mr Reddy emphasised on the need to increase nutrition-based foods in maritime and other rural areas.

“The ministry has increased seed supply to orchard farmers to ensure fruit prices decrease in the market,” he said.

“It’s for the benefit of ordinary Fijians.”

Women In Agriculture programme
Vatuniveivuke Womens Group representative Kalisiana Vuidreketi said the assistance would greatly improve the ability to plant and nurture flower plants.

“Women will be able to sell their flowers and support their families with the income they make,” Ms Vuidreketi said.

Lagalaga and Nubu visit
Thirty-five farmers from Lagalaga and thirty- two farmers from the Nubu Rice Farmers Cooperative yesterday received a portable rice mill to harvest their 52 acres of rice paddy.

The assistance was well received by both Cooperatives.

Nubu Cooperative president, Ami Chandra thanked the Minister for his continued support in assisting them with rice farming resources.

Mr Reddy said the mill would ensure farmers save transportation costs for the milling process because the mill would be readily available in their area.

“Our ministry has incentivised farmers to grow more rice for consumption and selling purposes,” he said.

“Eighty-four per cent of rice is imported from overseas.

“We want to reduce the quantity to encourage more local farmers to grow and harvest rice”.

He said that every tonnage of rice harvested helps the Ministry to reach their broader goal of increasing their rice production.
