More fire stations and better equipment are all part of the National Fire Authority’s (NFA) five-year strategic plan 2021 to 2026.

The plan was launched on Wednesday at the Suva Civic Centre.

Minister for Local Government Premila Kumar, in launching the plan, said this gave a concrete foundation to the direction the NFA was heading in.

She said the focus was now more towards fire prevention than fire fighting.

Ms Kumar highlighted that from the beginning of the year until yesterday there had been 101 reports of fire of which 88 had been residential and seven commercial.

She said the damage incurred by fires stood at $6 million. Of the 101 fires, 39 had been in the Central Eastern Division, 46 in the Western Division and 16 in the Northern Division.

She also highlighted that the fire in Sakoca where five homes were destroyed and 22 people left homeless was caused by an unattended cooking.

Ms Kumar said the new Nabouwalu Fire Station would bring the number of fire stations in Fiji to 21 and the next step is to have fire stations in maritime islands like Kadavu and Rotuma.

She said procurement of new equipment including vehicles was also a priority.

The plan has five strategic goals which includes safety and prevention, exceptional fire and emergency services, NFA sustainability, people strategy and NFA transformation.

NFA also announced the launch of its annual cost of operations for 2021-2022.
