Clean up your towns and cities and maintain the aesthetic appeal in each municipality all year round.

This was a stern yet simple message which the Minister for Local Government Premila Kumar gave to the municipal council chief executive officers during the CEO’s forum last week.

Ms Kumar reminded the councils that beautification works must continue.

“Towns and cities should always be kept clean. I discussed with the CEOs about what can be done as we gear up for December 1,” she said.

“Nadi Town Council has planted 30 palm trees and some more will be planted along the highway. Similarly work is being done in Suva in terms of beautification projects.

“City and town footpaths and walkways need to be regularly cleaned. Schedules need to be present. Because there is a pandemic, such services should not stop.”

Ms Kumar said building owners in towns and cities should also look at cleaning their buildings. She said some of the buildings have become an eye sore because they have not been cleaned in ages.

The Suva City Council has planted more trees along Rodwell Road and is working in partnership with the Fiji Roads Authority for various beautification projects.

Some Suva ratepayers have shown concern about buildings in the city.

A concern citizen, Inoke Muavesi of Cunningham said: “There are some very ugly looking buildings when you enter the city. I know there is no law that states that those buildings need to be clean but I hope there is one soon.”
